‘Broadband Accelerator’ to eliminate electrical interference in telephone-extension wiring

BT is set to more than double the headline speeds for millions of its residential and business customers for free.

According to BT, its trial has already improved the speeds of over 60,000 consumers and the upgrade to ADSL 2+ technology is expected to be available to other homes in the summer.

BT Retail broadband customers already get speeds of up to 8Mb/s. The company plans to boost up the speed to 20Mb/s for consumers and businesses in certain areas. Based on its 21CN platform, the faster speeds will initially be available from 549 telephone exchanges, which are expected to serve up to 40% of the homes and businesses. BT plans to extend the coverage to 55% by March 2010.

BT is also planning to offer its Broadband Accelerator free. The accelerator claims to eliminate electrical interference from telephone-extension wiring to improve broadband speeds.

In a separate move, BT Retail is also trialing up to 40Mb/s broadband in Whitchurch, South Wales and Muswell Hill, London this summer.
