Telecommunications firm Alcatel-Lucent has signed an agreement with Telefónica to overhaul its network management systems to streamline its operations, improve custommer services and pare cost.

Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will combine the operator's network management systems at the core of Telefonica's operational support systems into a single software platform, which will monitor and manages operation as well as resolves network problems.

The single global software platform is claimed to improve response times for the resolution of network issues. It also helps Telefonica streamline its operations, to enable enhanced service delivery to its customers.

In addition, Alcatel-Lucent will help Telefónica combine the practices and operating procedures developed in the different operations of Telefónica Group. It will also help standardise both software and procedures for network management across Telefonica's fixed and mobile networks.

Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will integrate the new network management software platform with the rest of Telefónica's network operations without disrupting existing services or impairing quality.

Alcatel-Lucent said it will also maintain the management software platform for the coming years.
